Watercolor Fruit Tutorial using Tombow Brush Pens

Oh, how I love experimenting with watercolors! Although there is nothing that beats some good artist quality watercolors, I’m pretty sure you’ll love this interesting take on them.

Watercolor Fruit Tutorial using Tombow Brush Pens

Hi, everyone. This is Zakkiya of Inkstruck Studio and today I’m going to show you a watercolor fruit tutorial using Tombow brush pens! Yes, you heard that right. It is entirely possible and a lot of fun too.

Materials required:

Some tips to keep in mind for the watercolor fruit tutorial:

  • Be gentle with your Tombows. They can fray if you’re rough with them.
  • Use an angle to lay down your strokes with a very light touch.
  • After each application of water on color, rinse your brush thoroughly.
  • You don’t need to do the entire structure of the fruit with Tombows. Water will do most of the work.

The watermelon slice

Draw the watermelon focusing only on the edges. Water is going to the rest of your work, so you don’t need much color at all. The number tag of the pens used in all the fruits has been drawn on the image above for your reference.

The red part of the watermelon starts off on a dark note and then lightens as it reaches the other side to give the indication of it being a watercolor painting. Allow it to dry and draw seeds using the pointed tip of your dual brush pen in black.

The Cherry Couple

For this example of watercolor fruit tutorial, the edges were drawn and then painted over. Keep in mind that the white space in between the two cherries show that they are different elements. Cherries are slightly glossy, so you’ll notice that the highlight is prominent which is shown below using a lighter wash.

The Abstract Grape

This illustration showcases a very abstract grape bunch. Again the process is similar as previously explained. If you want to have it a lot more realistic, just keep layering with the pens and wash. Use different shades of purple to show interest.

The Realistic Avocado

For this watercolor fruit tutorial, a base layer is created using the same method. Once the painting dries, layer with pen and water over the seed to make it pop and look spherical. You’ll also notice that the seed looks like it’s at a different depth as opposed to the flesh. And that can be achieved by simply darkening the edges on one side to create shadow and highlighting it by leaving a little white space.
