DIY Watercolor Doughnut Illustration
And I’m back! Hello hello. This is Zakkiya of Inkstruck Studio and I’m going to show you a fun watercolor tutorial. Since food illustrations are quite big at the moment, I decided that it would be appropriate to do one here. So today, you’re going to learn to create a DIY watercolor doughnut illustration in two different ways. So let’s get started!
DIY Watercolor Doughnut Illustration
I love doughnuts and by love I mean, LUUUUHHHVVV them. They’re super delicious, albeit rather unhealthy. But you know, who cares! They say live life to the fullest, yes?
Materials you’ll need:
1.The single doughnut
This DIY watercolor doughnut is a very fun, girly pink with sprinkles on top kind. They look really good in paintings and this is a fun way to explain depth in round objects.
Step 1: Draw two concentric circles in pencil to mimic the shape of a doughnut that you can see flat down. Draw a wavy shape inside the larger and outside the smaller circle that indicates where the glaze ends. Paint the remaining areas a light shade of brown. Darken the edges, under the glaze and also on the outermost part of the circle to indicate the round shape. Do the same for the inner circle as well.
Step 2: Paint a little pink hue on the glazed area. Darken the outer and inner edge while the paint is still wet to get a soft effect.
Step 3: Add another layer of pink and repeat Step 2. Add a shadow to the doughnut. I’m assuming that the light is falling from my left, so the shadow is cast on the right. Leave a little white space between the doughnut and beginning of the shadow. It will be darker nearer the doughnut and lighten as it goes farther. Don’t forget the inner shadow as well.
Step 4: Sprinkle time! Oh, this was so much fun to do. Paint sprinkles in different candy colors and make it as playful as possible. Add as many or as few as you like. It really depends on how much patience you have.
Step 5: You may think that this is the same as the previous step. But, if you look closely, you’ll see that there are shadows under the sprinkles. This is a crucial step because the sprinkles are sitting on top of the glaze. This will cast some sort of shadow which is important not to overlook.
And that’s it! Your very own pink watercolor doughnut illustration.
2.The stacked doughnut
Step 1: Draw three or more doughnuts stacked on top of the other. You’ll need to draw an elliptical shape with a half ellipse at the top-middle just as how it’s shown in the image. Don’t forget to draw the uneven line of the glaze trickling down the doughnut. Paint a wash of brown first and darken the area just beneath the glazed area while the paint is still wet.
Step 2: Fill in the color of the glaze. Don’t forget to paint the glaze that you can see behind. Deepen the color on the edges to depict the shine and depth of the drip.
Step 3: Add white sprinkles on the top two using white ink. For the bottom doughnut, I thought of something like Samoa or coconut and hazelnuts. Anything with texture really. For this, you’ll need to stipple using the tip fo your watercolor brush in white and brown. Add a line and blend it out so that the doughnuts don’t look like they’re floating in the air.
There you go! A stacked watercolor doughnut illustration which looks so good that you want to eat it.
