Halloween Hand Lettering: Three fun ways
Before beginning any sort of theme inspired lettering, there are a couple of things you can take into account. These will help you modify your lettering in accordance to the theme.
Pro tips you can follow :
- Think about the colors! For this brush lettering tutorial, I used oranges, greens and purples which are reminiscent of Halloween.
- Decide the elements you want to use. Spiders, pumpkins, witches, cauldrons etc, the list is endless. Play with options to create something beautiful.
- Brush lettering looks beautiful on it’s own. But you can always spruce it up using shadows, contrast and blending.
Materials required :
- Tombow dual tip brush pens or any marker with a flexible tip
- Micron pens
- Pencil for guideline
- Cardstock or any paper that is smooth
1.”Trick or Treat”
Well obviously this is what Halloween is all about. The fun in collecting candies! First, letter down the words on cardstock. I used the Tombow dual brush marker in 925. Leave the dot over the “I” because I’m going to add an element in its place.
Next, draw a spider web behind it. I used micron pens and then went over it using the N95 brush pen to give it dimension. This is really subtle but it gives a lovely depth to the drawing. Add a cute little spider illustration over the “I” to make it playful.
This step is optional but highly recommended. Using a shade darker than the orange, go over the top half of the lettering. I used the 885 marker to do this. This really makes the letters pop and you’ll notice that by doing this, the main lettering becomes the focus.

2. “Boo to You”
This style is pretty easy and quick. Write down your choice of word using a single color. I used the 636 marker. Now, drop down shadows to your letters using any shade of gray. I used N95. A tip on applying shadows is that everything needs to be uniform. Imagine the sun to be in a particular position and now consider the shadow it makes. Here, assuming the sun is on the top-right, the shadows fall to the bottom-left of the letters.
For a little quirkiness, add a couple of ghost outlines sprinkled around your lettering. Cute, aren’t they?

3.”Happy Halloween”
Write down your words in pencil first. Now, run a line through the middle. Here, I’ve used a bit of sway to my letters and hence the line sways too. Next, write the top half of your letters in one color. I used the 636 marker here. Then, write the bottom half in another color. Preferably something that contrasts the previous one. I used the 195 marker here. Does it remind you of “The Joker”. Eerily, it does for me too!
